Overview: Private security is one of the fastest growing
industries in the United States. You can earn extra cash with jobs
starting at up to $9 an hour. In order to work as a security guard,
New York State law mandates that all personnel complete this eight
hour course which includes the necessary training, review, and exam
required for certification. Learn the role of security guards
including patrol techniques, response/preparedness in emergency
situations, legal powers in arrest/custody procedures, use of force,
civil liability, and the importance of court testimony. Understand
the standard procedures for communications and public relations,
types and methods of access control, the basics of report writing,
and the Security Guard Code of Ethics. Students receiving 70% or
better on the exam will receive a certificate of completion and will
be certified with New York State. To be eligible for employment in
private security as an unarmed security guard, you must be
fingerprinted by a local police department and certified with NYS
(there is a filing fee). Please bring your social security number to
class. There will be a one hour lunch break.
